Nowadays computer technology and mathematical models are indispensable in innovative lines of business and companies.
Car navigation, computer models assisting with difficult surgery, weather forecasts
being used in controlling installations for production of "green" energy - examples from daily life.
For the operation of wastewater treatment plants, simulation with the help of mathematical models has reached a state,
where it can be profitably employed in practice. The following examples
are questions, that can be answered reliably today through dynamical simulation of WWTP's:
- Investigations on whether additional flow streams can be accomodated (see Example: additional flow stream, highly loaded with ammonia) or on facility control strategies in case of trouble in the production units or breakdown of single treatment steps (e.g. whether and how collected, highly loaded wastewater can be treated in the facility without violating permit values)
- Investigation of operation of a facility, while certain parts of the facility are taken offline temporarily (e.g. for planned revisions or repairs)
- Consideration of substances, which may inhibit or disturb the treatment of organic substrates or nitrification
